HORSE SLAUGHTER - A Shocking Practice
More than 65,000 horses, most of them racehorses, work horses or pets, were slaughtered in this country in 2004, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is an alarming 30% increase over the previous year. Tens of thousands more were shipped live to Canada and Mexico for slaughter there.
American horses are slaughtered for human consumption in Europe and Asia where the meat is considered a delicacy. There are just three facilities that slaughter horses in the U.S., and all are foreign-owned.
Most horses arrive at the slaughterhouse via livestock auctions where, often unknown to the seller, they are bought by middlemen working for the slaughter plants. These so-called "killer buyers" travel from one auction to the next collecting young, old, sick and healthy animals until their trucks are full.
Callous treatment of horses at the slaughterhouse often results in their prolonged suffering. Panicked horses are prodded and beaten off the truck and into the kill-chute. The improper use of stunning equipment, designed to render the animal unconscious with a swift shot to the head, means that horses sometimes endure repeated blows and remain conscious during their own slaughter. Although supporters of the practice often refer to horse slaughter as “humane euthanasia”, there can be no mistaking it – horse slaughter is not humane, and poll after poll show that Americans want the cruelty to end.

As you can see, It is not beaten old horses that would die soon anyway. Many of the horses are all perfectly fine horses. Race horses have been slaughtered not long after victory. Horses from farms are stolen.

This horse was just knocked upside the head ... This picturse ... was his last moments. Now he will gallop down a chute and then trip and fall into a cold medal box. How can this man do this for a living? ^^ It's just hard for me to belive that this picture was taken a second before this horse died.
